Hi, I’m Michael Steininger

I build for the web and lead the teams behind it.

Senior Manager Frontend Development at world4you, where my team builds the platforms that 130,000+ hosting customers use every day. Owner of WebDev Solutions. Building for the web since 2014, turning architecture into systems that hold up.

How I got here

My first real code was an IRC bot script — I wanted a channel to display its own chat statistics, and getting there meant writing my first PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

That settled it. I specialised in web development at HTL Rennweg, graduated, and have been doing it professionally ever since.

How I lead

I lead the frontend team at world4you — functional and disciplinary: technical direction as well as hiring, one-to-ones and feedback.

When I got the opportunity to lead the team, it was one developer besides me. I have hired and mentored everyone who joined since — four developers today, all still with me, and we have learned from each other along the way.

I spend most of my time setting the direction, surfacing what is blocking people and acting on what I hear. When something is not right with the team, resolving it is my job.

What I put in place

Open source

Most of my career has been built on open source — frameworks and tools someone else maintained so I did not have to. Eventually I stopped only consuming and started giving back: bug reports, fixes, documentation.
